A minor died by suicide late Sunday night after jumping from the high-level Interstate 95 bridge connecting Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Kittery, Maine. The victim’s body was recovered from the Piscataqua River early Monday morning, according to New Hampshire State Police.
Authorities have not publicly released the victim’s age or gender but confirmed they were under 18 years old. State Police spokesperson Tyler Dumont stated Monday that the death does not appear to be suspicious. The case marks the third suicide from area bridges in recent weeks.
Shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday, emergency crews from both states responded to a report of a stopped and empty vehicle on the southbound side of the bridge. In the darkness, searchers began scouring the river, continuing efforts until approximately 11:30 p.m. The search was temporarily paused due to limited visibility and resumed at first light. The minor’s body was found around 6 a.m. Monday.
Dumont emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing but no foul play is suspected. “At this time, investigators do not believe the death is suspicious,” he said in a public statement.
The recent string of suicides from the bridges spanning the Piscataqua River has prompted growing concern within the Seacoast communities of New Hampshire and southern Maine. Officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and to seek support when experiencing mental health struggles.
“The State Police remind anyone struggling with a mental health crisis that help is available,” Dumont added. “Anyone can call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 9-8-8 for free and confidential support for themselves, a friend, or a loved one.”
Crisis counselors and mental health organizations are encouraging families, schools, and community leaders to talk openly about mental health and to look out for signs of distress, particularly among youth.
