m53 crash Today: Man Dies Following M53 Crash Near Eastham Exit

Fatal Collision on M53 Leaves One Dead – A tragic road traffic accident on the M53 motorway in Merseyside claimed the life of a 49-year-old man from the Wirral on the morning of Thursday, May 8. The incident occurred around 8:15 a.m. near the Eastham exit and involved a white Peugeot van and a red Volkswagen car.

Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene following reports of the crash. The victim, who was driving the Peugeot van, was initially treated by paramedics at the roadside before being transported to the hospital. Despite the medical team’s efforts, the man later succumbed to his injuries. Merseyside Police have since confirmed the fatality, and the man’s family is being supported by specially trained officers during this difficult time.

The second driver involved in the collision, a 64-year-old man also from the Wirral, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the police as they carry out their investigation. Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the collision, and inquiries are ongoing. Inspector Ian Cowell of Merseyside Police’s Roads Policing Unit expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and emphasized the importance of uncovering the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“This collision happened on a busy part of the motorway network,” Inspector Cowell stated. “Early enquiries suggest there were multiple vehicles in the vicinity, and we believe witnesses or dashcam footage may provide valuable insight.” He urged anyone with information, no matter how minor it may seem, to contact the police and assist with the investigation.

As a result of the incident, the southbound section of the M53 between Junction 4 (Clatterbridge Interchange) and Junction 7 (Netherpool Interchange) has been closed to allow for a thorough forensic examination of the scene. According to the National Highways agency, the closure is expected to remain in effect until at least 4:30 p.m. and is likely to cause significant disruption to local traffic.

Motorists have been advised to follow a designated diversion route: leave the M53 at Junction 4, follow the B5151 and B5133, connect to the A41, A550, and A540 before rejoining the motorway at Junction 10. The route passes through areas including Neston, Parkgate, and Cheshire Oaks.

Police are appealing to members of the public who may have witnessed the collision or have relevant dashcam footage to come forward.
